VinoMojo Wine Tasting Subscription
Vinomojo Wine Tasting Box

Wine tastings have always been a favourite activity of mine; ideal for a girls night, travel activity, weekend away or date night. During the pandemic the growth of at home wine tasting has been fantastic to see and a real pleasure to enjoy!

VinoMojo is a flexible wine subscription that encourages you to learn more about the wine you drink by exploring different grapes, regions or themes. Each wine comes with an expert video tutorial and guided tasting that you can easily access at any time as you expand your wine horizons and develop confidence to be your own sommelier!

How it works

A VinoMojo subscription box includes 4 full-sized bottles of wine - comprised of 3 showcase wines focusing on a particular grape or region and a 4th wine that is selected to expand your wine knowledge  with a rarer or more unusual variety. When you sign up you select whether you wish to receive red or white wine, and you can also alternate between the two. This is changeable in your online account portal or through customer services. There will also be special boxes on offer throughout the year, just like my festive reds box, or sparkling options.

Accompanying each box is an interactive guided tasting of each wine, tasting notes and videos from wine experts to get the most out of your wine discoveries. In your accounts' learning hub they list the bottles of wine you have received, with further learning, ratings and notes space so you can always remember the one you loved when you have your next dinner party!

Online wine tasting from VinoMojo - with the suggested order for tasting and notes available.

The wines come safely packaged via courier & free delivery is included with your subscription. The subscriptions are very flexible; you can switch your wine preference, reduce/increase frequency, pause and cancel easily in your portal should you wish to. The website gives you an insight into next months box and allows you to decide if you should wish to skip that one, or switch from red/white based on that information.

Subscriptions are also available as a gift membership. You are able to choose how many boxes they receive and the wine options to give them the gift of wine exploration!

The Tasting

Fantastically the tastings are not at a scheduled time, so they can be watched at your own leisure. As this subscription provides full sized bottles, I think it's extremely important that you can pace these at your own desire. This should stop you having lots of partially open bottles of wine and allow you to enjoy your tasting thoroughly. It would be a fun idea to have some friends over and share the tasting as well, as the full sized bottles will allow you to do this easily! I loved that the box comes with a recommended order to try the wines in and suggested food pairings, so you could easily do these throughout the month. Each tasting lasts roughly 5-10 minutes so this would be perfect to kick off a dinner, alongside serving the suggested food pairing to learn with friends or as date nights!

The Festive Foodie Reds Wine Selection

My box was the Festive Foodie Reds and contained 4 beautiful looking red wines to enjoy alongside the the virtual tastings. I was excited to learn more about their background, flavour profile and food pairings. All of the wines are available to purchase after the tasting if you find something you fall in love with and you may be able to find them at other retailers as well. I really like that the wines are accessible, so that you can recommend them to friends (along with a subscription!) and pick them up as you need them. Plus at the end of the tasting there is a recommendation of similar wine styles to try from your local supermarket chains and wine merchants!

Jean Loron Beaujolais Tasting

Maison Loron Beaujolais

Winemakers since 1711, Maison Loron pride themselves on wine of character. This Beaujolais  uses the local Bordeaux grape speciality Gamay and is delightfully light and juicy. It has an aromatic nose and is refreshingly acidic alongside it's strong red fruit flavours of raspberry and strawberry. As a light wine, with high acidity it is the perfect accompaniment to light meats like turkey & cranberry sauce for Christmas! You always want to have a wine with higher acidity than your food to enhance the wines sweetness and body and compliment the food. Outside of Festive pairings, this wine would be ideal with light meats, mushrooms or simply for drinking on its own as it's that light!

CVNE Rioja Crianza

CVNE are known as innovators in the heart of Rioja. This is a Crianza, which means it has had a minimum of 1 year ageing in an oak cask  and  unique mix with stainless steel barrels to give it a modern fruit forward flavour. To learn more read about other Rioja's read my Masterclass review here! This is a rounded & smooth Rioja with vibrant red fruit & cherry flavours, a rich colour and woody aromas. This wine was selected to pair with glazed ham on you Festive menu as the saltiness and combined sweetness of a glaze will balance out the fruitiness and it has sufficient acidity to cut through the fattiness of ham. Outside of Christmas dining this wine is ideal with tapas unsurprisingly!

Château Recougne, Bourdeaux Supérieur

This Merlot-based blend certainly is fit for a king (or queen!). Legend has it that Henry IV was so impressed by the quality of the Château Recougne wine, he declared the château as recognised land which is still shown on the wax seal on the label! Exceptionally smooth with wonderful complexity of spice & earthiness from it's oak ageing and the inclusion of Carménère grapes in the blend. The Supérieur name guarantees a level of quality that insists conditions are met to produce an intensely smooth wine. The intensity of the structure means that this wine is the perfect pairing for equally intense food. Therefore it's great paired with red meats, like roast beef.

Learning more about my wine!

Ramos Reserva, Alentejo

The Explorer wine in the Festive Foodie box is the Ramos Reserva from Alentejo, Portugal. This is a robust full bodied, deep coloured red wine, with dense aromas and a full bodied jammy palate. It has a really nice length and well balanced tannins from it's use of Trincadeira & Syrah in the blend. A wine this strong can hold up against some really bold and varied flavours and it was selected as the ideal tipple to accompany cheese.  Try this with a local combination of Sao Jorge cheese or other varieties of aged hard cheese, manchego, comte etc. If you wanted to savour this wine with a main dish it is recommended with roasted pork and Mediterranean/Portuguese flavours.

Verdict

I really enjoyed the approach VinoMojo has taken to modern wine tasting. The tasting videos are short in length and available at any time, making it perfect for any occasion. Your guests would not find the videos accompanying a meal obtrusive and it gives a great talking point for your dinner that a full bottle tasting allows for! Wine tastings can be inaccessible due to the price of purchase for one of the wines you fall in love with, however I truly loved the fact that all the wines in the boxes are delicious, varied and reasonably easy to locate should you want to purchase them again. I'm looking forward to discovering more affordable and complex, interesting wines, alongside increasing my wine knowledge with my next delivery!
