The Salt Shed, Brighton West Pier

Smoke, sea air and seriously good BBQ — The Salt Shed is a small but standout spot on Brighton seafront, serving up bold flavours and perfectly cooked meats in a relaxed, trendy setting.

The Salt Shed, Brighton West Pier

A spring weekend away in Brighton for my birthday called for something a little special — a bit different, relaxed and all about great food. The Salt Shed on West Pier delivered exactly that, with fire, meat, barbeque and a laid-back atmosphere that felt perfect for the occasion.

Set within the beachfront arches not far from the British Airways i360, The Salt Shed is a small but seriously stylish BBQ beach spot with a clear focus: great meat, cooked simply and well over fire.

The space itself is cosy and intimate, with limited indoor seating and additional outdoor tables that would come into their own on a sunny day. The vibe is casual but trendy — the kind of place that feels effortlessly cool without trying too hard.

With its smokehouse, BBQ-led concept, it’s ideal for groups looking to share, or equally for a relaxed date with seriously good food at the centre of it. One thing to note: it’s popular, and for good reason — booking is essential, especially if you’ve got your heart set on sitting inside.

The Food

The menu is intentionally small, focused on doing a few things exceptionally well — and it absolutely delivers on that promise.

We started with The Salt Shed’s own cider, which felt like the perfect choice by the sea — crisp, refreshing and easy to drink. A small touch we loved was the popcorn brought out alongside drinks, a simple but thoughtful way to tide you over while deciding what to order.

We couldn't resist their signature three-meat sharer board for our meal — and this is absolutely a great way to experience The Salt Shed. The board included; a 32 day aged Bavette steak, with a punchy chimichurri and pickled onions, crispy charcoal cooked chicken thigh with lime & garlic sauce and finally their BBQ glazed pastrami steak.

Everything was cooked with real confidence — tender, flavour-packed and unfussy in the best way. This is food that doesn’t need overcomplicating and the sauces added extra oomph to an already delicious sharer.

On the side, the mac and cheese with bacon jam was rich and indulgent, the perfect partner to the meats, while the rosemary salted fries added that essential crispy, savoury balance.

Portion-wise, sharers are definitely the way to go, though how many you order will depend on your appetite — it’s easy to get carried away when everything sounds this good!

We didn’t try them this time, but the burgers coming out of the kitchen looked incredible and are firmly on the list for a future visit.

Would I Recommend?

The Salt Shed is a cool, trendy spot that keeps things simple and executes it perfectly. The small, focused menu, quality ingredients and relaxed setting make it a standout choice on Brighton seafront, particularly for meat lovers.

It’s ideal for groups, date nights or anyone looking for something a little different from the usual seaside dining options. While it sits at a slightly higher price point for a casual meal, the quality and overall experience make it well worth it — and definitely somewhere I’d return to.
